ABOUT THE PLACE

A walk of faith and forest

Once a year, in the holy month of Kartik (around November, just after Diwali), the forested foothills of Mount Girnar come alive with one of Gujarat’s great pilgrimages — the Girnar Lili Parikrama, a roughly 36-kilometre circumambulation of the sacred mountain.

Over several days, lakhs of devotees, sadhus and pilgrims walk the forest trail that loops around Girnar’s base, passing through the fringe of the Gir wilderness, crossing streams and ridges, halting at shrines, akhadas and resting points, and camping along the way amid an atmosphere of devotion, music and shared journey. The ‘Lili’ (green) parikrama takes its name from the lush post-monsoon forest.

Demanding but deeply rewarding, it is a unique blend of pilgrimage, trekking and festival that offers an extraordinary glimpse into living faith — and into a stretch of forest otherwise closed to visitors. (A seasonal mass pilgrimage; go prepared for crowds, walking and basic conditions.)
