ABOUT THE PLACE

A self-guided stepwell trail

The Charotar plain of Anand district is dotted with medieval stepwells (vavs) — from the well-known Borsad Stepwell to smaller, almost unknown examples in village fields. Together they form one of Gujarat’s most rewarding self-guided heritage trails.

A traveller with a day in Anand can follow the stepwell circuit: start at the Borsad Stepwell (seven storeys, magnificent), then ask locals to direct you to the smaller village vavs nearby. Each is a dark, spiralling descent through arched stone galleries — quiet, cool and almost entirely free of other visitors.

The Charotar vav trail is not sign-posted, not organised, not part of any tourism itinerary. It’s a journey for the curious — the kind of day that rewards wandering, asking and trusting local knowledge over any map. (A self-guided trail; all free; take care near shaft edges.)

HISTORY

From a riverside experiment to the road to freedom

Medieval

Across medieval Gujarat, vavs were carved deep into the earth as cool refuges and sacred water sources — engineering and devotion in one descent.

Charotar

The fertile Charotar plain grew prosperous on farming, and that wealth funded the building of grand stepwells across its villages.

Borsad vav

The Borsad Stepwell became the showpiece of the region — seven storeys of arched galleries spiralling into the dark.

Village vavs

Smaller wells were sunk in field and hamlet alike; today most lie hidden, forgotten and known only to the locals around them.
