HIDDEN GEM · VAV TRAILAn underground Gothic trail — the Charotar stepwells circuit, a self-guided wander through the medieval vavs of Anand district, from the famous Borsad Stepwell to smaller village wells almost no outsider ever visits.
The Charotar plain of Anand district is dotted with medieval stepwells (vavs) — from the well-known Borsad Stepwell to smaller, almost unknown examples in village fields. Together they form one of Gujarat’s most rewarding self-guided heritage trails.
A traveller with a day in Anand can follow the stepwell circuit: start at the Borsad Stepwell (seven storeys, magnificent), then ask locals to direct you to the smaller village vavs nearby. Each is a dark, spiralling descent through arched stone galleries — quiet, cool and almost entirely free of other visitors.
The Charotar vav trail is not sign-posted, not organised, not part of any tourism itinerary. It’s a journey for the curious — the kind of day that rewards wandering, asking and trusting local knowledge over any map. (A self-guided trail; all free; take care near shaft edges.)

Across medieval Gujarat, vavs were carved deep into the earth as cool refuges and sacred water sources — engineering and devotion in one descent.
The fertile Charotar plain grew prosperous on farming, and that wealth funded the building of grand stepwells across its villages.
The Borsad Stepwell became the showpiece of the region — seven storeys of arched galleries spiralling into the dark.
Smaller wells were sunk in field and hamlet alike; today most lie hidden, forgotten and known only to the locals around them.
Extraordinary heritage carved deep into the Charotar earth.
Watch daylight fall in slow shafts down the spiralling galleries.
Several stops strung across the plain, not a single sight.
Almost no tourists ever find these village vavs.
Medieval craft in every arch, bracket and step.
Your own adventure — wander, ask and discover at your pace.
Seven storeys deep — the magnificent, well-known anchor of the trail.
Almost unknown wells hidden in the fields and hamlets nearby.
Cool, dark corridors that spiral down through carved medieval stone.
Soft shafts of light falling storey by storey into the well.
Brackets, niches and ornament cut by hand centuries ago.
Quiet, empty descents far from any other visitor.
Begin at the main vav — seven storeys of arched stone, the showpiece of the whole circuit.
About the village vavs — this trail is unmarked, and local knowledge is your only real map.
Self-guided and unhurried, stitch the stops together at your own wandering pace.
Seven storeys plunge into cool darkness — peer carefully over the edge of each well.
Trace the carved stone corridors that spiral down through the medieval masonry.
The smaller, forgotten village vavs are the real gems — seek them out.
