Where a sacred river meets the sea

Below Bharuch the Narmada stops being a river in any ordinary sense. Its channel widens past the Golden Bridge into a funnel of brown water, sandbanks and mangrove fringe, until somewhere off Aliabet island it simply becomes the Gulf of Khambhat. This is the estuary — the last act of a 1,300-kilometre river that Hindu tradition holds so sacred that merely seeing it cleanses, where the Ganga must be bathed in.

For the faithful, the mouth matters: a river worshipped along her whole length completes herself here. For everyone else, the estuary is one of Gujarat's great overlooked landscapes — vast, tidal, bird-rich and almost entirely unvisited.

The tidal engine

The Gulf of Khambhat has among the highest tidal ranges in India, and the estuary breathes with it twice a day. The Golden Bridge and its rail twin carry you over the widening channel. Downstream, the coastal villages off the Bharuch–Dahej road reach the mudflat country, and Aliabet island — reached by local arrangement — sits in the mouth itself, windswept and bare, with the river on one side and the gulf on the other.

Low tide plus early morning is the formula: birds concentrated on the exposed mud, fishing fleets working, and the light low across the water. Binoculars are essential; the distances out here defeat the naked eye.

November to February is the season — the migrant waders are in and the weather is kind. The monsoon turns the river enormous and dramatic but shuts down most access. Treat the flats with respect: the mud is soft, the tide comes in fast across flat ground, and local advice on where to walk is not optional. There are no visitor facilities anywhere on the estuary — carry everything.
