ABOUT THE PLACE

A merchant's lake, reborn

Gopi Talav is a historic lake at the heart of Surat, originally built in the early 16th century by Malik Gopi — a wealthy merchant and statesman after whom the city’s Gopipura quarter is named.

For centuries a key water source, the tank fell into neglect before being magnificently restored in recent years into a landscaped destination: a wide, geometric lake ringed by a plaza, walkways, fountains, gardens, an island pavilion and food courts, beautifully lit after dark.

Today it is one of Surat’s favourite public spaces — a place to stroll, gather and relax — and a fine example of how the city has reclaimed its heritage water bodies. Lovely by day and magical at night. A public lake-plaza; free to enter.
