Surendranagar itself is a relatively modern town that grew as a cotton-trading and administrative centre, while Wadhwan is far older — a former princely capital with a rich heritage of carved temples, the famous Madhavav stepwell, and the legend of Ranak Devi.
Wadhwan carries the older heritage — Rajput-era gates, temples and the Ganga Vav stepwell — while Surendranagar across the river holds the cotton trade, the railway junction and the district offices. Together they make the practical base for the Little Rann’s wild-ass safaris from Bajana and Dhrangadhra; October to March is the season for both town and salt flats.
