✦ DISTRICT TRAVEL GUIDEFolk fairs & the wild-ass plains.
Surendranagar is one of Gujarat's 33 districts — explore its destinations, culture, food, heritage, wildlife and hidden gems in this complete travel guide.
Surendranagar — the heart of the historic Zalawad region — is a district of salt flats, sandstone towns and tribal colour in eastern Saurashtra. Its western edge dissolves into the Little Rann of Kutch, the last refuge of the Indian wild ass (khur), where safaris cross a shimmering white-and-brown desert alive with flamingos and gazelle.
Each monsoon, the famous Tarnetar fair erupts in a riot of embroidered umbrellas as tribal youth seek their match beside the Trinetreshwar temple. Hilltop Chotila, royal Dhrangadhra and the old forts of Zinzuwada complete a wonderfully off-beat district.
