ABOUT THE PLACE

A shore of dark sand

Dumas is the best-loved beach near Surat — a long stretch of distinctive dark, mineral-rich sand on the Arabian Sea, about 16 km from the city. Its grey-black sands, coloured by the local geology, give the beach a moody, dramatic character, and it is a favourite weekend escape for Surtis, who come for the sea breeze, the long shoreline walks, the sunsets and, above all, the rows of food stalls serving Surat’s famous snacks.

Camel and horse rides, the lapping waves and the open horizon make it a relaxed, festive place by the sea. A classic seaside outing for the city. (A public beach; swimming can be unsafe — heed local warnings.)

HISTORY

Dark sand, and a city that comes for sunset

Dumas at dusk.

The sand here is grey-black, coloured by mineral-rich sediment carried down by the rivers off the Deccan trap and deposited along this stretch of coast.

Dumas is about 16 km from Surat, close enough that the city treats it as its own front, and it fills every weekend evening.

The stall rows are the real draw — bhajiya, locho, ponk in season, chai and roasted corn, sold from a line of carts along the front.

Sunset over the Arabian Sea is what most people come for, and the crowd builds through the last hour of daylight.

WHY VISIT

Reasons to make the time

Dark sand

Dark sand against a bright sea gives the beach a distinctly moody look, quite unlike the pale shores of Saurashtra.

🌬️

Sea breeze

The sea breeze is the point on a Surat evening — noticeably cooler and fresher than the city 16 km inland.

🌅

Sunsets

The beach faces west, so the sunset runs straight down the shoreline and everyone stops to watch it.

🍢

Food stalls

Surti street food is the beach's signature: bhajiya first, then locho, and ponk through the short winter season.

🐪

Rides

Camel and horse rides work the sand in the evenings, mainly for families with children.

🌊

Open horizon

The tidal range here is large, and at low tide the exposed flat runs a long way out.

THINGS TO DO

How to spend an hour or two

01

Walk the dark sands

Walk the length of the shore at low tide, when the exposed flat runs far out and the crowds thin.

02

Watch the sunset

Be there for sunset. The beach faces due west and it is comfortably the best hour of the day.

03

Try the food stalls

Eat at the stalls — bhajiya and locho are the Surti classics here, and ponk if you come in winter.

04

Feel the sea breeze

Come in the evening for the breeze, which is the main reason the city drives out here.

05

Take a camel ride

Take a camel or horse ride along the sand if you have children with you.

06

Relax by the waves

Treat the water with caution. The currents and the tidal range make this an unsafe swimming beach; heed the warnings.
