ABOUT THE PLACE

The high view over the holy town

At the far western edge of Dwarka, near the point where the Gomti meets the Arabian Sea, a tall striped lighthouse rises above the rooftops — a working beacon guiding ships along the Saurashtra coast, and one of the best vantage points in town.

Visitors are usually allowed to climb the tower in the evening hours, up a tight spiral stair to a breezy gallery near the top. From there the whole of Dwarka unfolds: the temple spire and its flag, the maze of old lanes, the fishing harbour, and the endless silver expanse of the sea.

It is, unsurprisingly, a favourite spot for sunset — when the light turns gold, the flag catches the breeze, and the town glows beneath you.

HISTORY

A working beacon you are allowed to climb

A working lighthouse, open to visitors.

Purpose

The lighthouse was built to work a genuinely dangerous coast — the reefs and shoals off Dwarka have wrecked ships for centuries.

Working beacon

It is an active navigational light, not a preserved monument, and it still does the job it was built for.

Open to all

Visitors are admitted to climb it, generally in the evening hours, for a small ticket at the base.

Today

It has become the town's favourite sunset spot, and the only place to see Dwarka laid out from above.

WHY VISIT

Reasons to make the time

🌅

Best sunset

This is the best golden hour in Dwarka — high, open and facing straight out over the water.

🔭

360° views

From the gallery you can see the temple, the old town, the harbour and the sea all at once.

🧗

Climb it

The climb is a tight spiral stair up the inside of the tower to the open gallery at the top.

📸

Photographer's perch

The views run in every direction, which is unusual — most viewpoints give you one aspect.

🌊

Sea & sky

The Arabian Sea horizon runs unbroken from here, with nothing between you and it.

🚶

Quick stop

It costs twenty minutes and slots easily into the end of any Dwarka day.

THINGS TO DO

How to spend an hour or two

01

Time it for evening

Arrive as the tower opens for the evening, so you are climbing rather than queueing when the light turns.

02

Climb the stair

Take the spiral stair to the upper gallery — it is narrow and steep, and worth the effort.

03

Find the temple

Pick out the Dwarkadhish spire and its flag, which is changed several times a day and visible from up here.

04

Watch the sunset

Stay through sunset. The whole reason to come in the evening is what happens in the last twenty minutes.

05

Scan the harbour

Look down at the fishing boats and jetties, which give you the working half of Dwarka the temple hides.

06

Shoot the panorama

Frame the old town from above; it is the only vantage point in Dwarka that offers it.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

A spiral climb to a sea-view gallery

The Dwarka lighthouse is a tall, slender masonry tower, banded in the familiar lighthouse stripes, topped by its lantern and an open viewing gallery. Inside, a tight spiral staircase winds up to the top.

Its position is everything: set at the western edge of the town, almost surrounded by water, it commands an uninterrupted sweep from the temple and old town on one side to the open Arabian Sea on the other. Few climbs in Gujarat repay the effort so immediately.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

When to go

WINTERNov – Feb★★★★★

November to February is the best season on the Dwarka coast — clear evenings and comfortable climbing weather.

MONSOONJul – Sep★★★☆☆

The monsoon is warm and humid with a heavy sea; the tower may close in bad weather, so check first.

SUMMERMar – Jun★★★☆☆

April to June is hot and bright, though the evening sea breeze at the top of the tower is a genuine relief.

⏰ Arrive shortly before the evening opening so you can climb and be at the top for sunset.

TRAVEL TIPS

Know before you go

1Go in the evening. The tower is generally only open to visitors for a short window in the late afternoon.
2Time the climb so you are on the gallery for sunset rather than still on the stairs.
3The staircase is a tight spiral and steep. It is not a good idea if you are unsteady or dislike heights.
4Carry a camera. This is the only elevated view of Dwarka and the light at sunset is exceptional.
5Check the day's timings locally. Opening hours vary and the tower closes in poor weather.
6Combine it with Gomti Ghat and Sudama Setu, both a short walk away at the river mouth.
