ABOUT THE PLACE

A small town with an enormous devotion

Shirdi is a small town in Maharashtra with an outsized place in India’s devotional life. It was here that the saint Sai Baba lived, taught and was laid to rest, and today his shrine draws a constant tide of pilgrims.

Revered by Hindus and Muslims alike for his message of faith, patience and unity, Sai Baba has an especially large following among the communities of Gujarat and western India.

For all its fame, Shirdi remains at heart a pilgrimage town, its streets shaped around the temple complex, the queues and the places tied to Baba’s life, and it is well organised for the huge numbers who arrive daily.

Pilgrims gather day and night around the Samadhi Mandir of Sai Baba.
