ABOUT THE PLACE

A fort above a sea of blue

Jodhpur is dominated, utterly, by Mehrangarh Fort, one of the grandest forts in India, which rises on a rocky bluff straight out of the old city above a jumble of blue-painted houses.

The second-largest city in Rajasthan and once capital of the Marwar kingdom, Jodhpur pairs this dramatic setting with lively bazaars, good food and a warm, unpolished energy.

For travellers coming up from Gujarat, it is a rewarding gateway to western Rajasthan, well placed on the way to Jaisalmer and the Thar.

Mehrangarh Fort towers over the blue houses of Jodhpur’s old city.
