ABOUT THE PLACE

A green weekend in the hills

Silvassa is the leafy capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, a small Union Territory of forested hills tucked between southern Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Dudhni deserves its top billing: the Madhuban reservoir’s arm winds between forested slopes twenty-five kilometres from town, shikaras and paddle boats working water still enough to double the hills, and the lake’s quiet outlasts even long-weekend crowds a short row from the jetty.

Families should note the practical grace notes: the safari runs morning and afternoon slots with tickets at the gate, the gardens stay open into the evening, and the riverside resorts’ day-use packages solve lunch and pools in one booking.

Once a Portuguese territory, it is now known for its landscaped gardens, tribal heritage, a lion safari and the calm waters of Dudhni Lake in the surrounding hills.

Easy to reach from Vapi and Surat, Silvassa is a popular, family-friendly weekend escape — a quick dose of green, water and open air close to home.

The Portuguese chapter gives Silvassa its odd flavour: Dadra and Nagar Haveli stayed Lisbon’s territory until 1954 — liberated by volunteers in one of decolonisation’s stranger episodes — and the town keeps its church, a scatter of colonial buildings and place names as souvenirs. The deeper identity is Adivasi: Warli, Dhodia and Kokna villages fill the forested hills, the tribal museum documents their painting and dance, and the territory’s festivals — Tarpa dances at fairs, the Warli’s ritual art — connect Silvassa culturally to the Dangs next door.

Logistics could not be easier: Vapi’s rail junction is 18 kilometres away, Surat under two hours, and the union territory’s low taxes keep the resorts and riverside camps competitively priced — the reason half of south Gujarat arrives on long weekends. Book those weekends ahead, aim for the monsoon-to-winter window, and build the day around Dudhni’s boats, the safari and the gardens, with the Madhuban reservoir’s backwater drives for the unhurried.
