ABOUT THE PLACE

A queen's town on the Narmada

Maheshwar is a tranquil, timeless town on the north bank of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh, its riverfront lined with stone ghats, temples and the graceful Ahilya Fort.

The ghats deserve their fame ahead of the fort: broad stone terraces stepping into the Narmada, temple spires and memorial chhatris rising straight from the water, women beating laundry beside priests mid-ritual, and boats sliding past at the pace the river sets. The carving on the Ahilyeshwar chhatri’s stone — processions, elephants, floral bands — repays close looking, and the whole waterfront turns copper in the last hour of light.

Weaving is the town’s living industry, not a demonstration: some hundreds of looms work in the lanes behind the fort, the click of shuttles audible from the street, and the weavers welcome quiet visitors between orders. A genuine Maheshwari carries its lightness as its proof — the fabric gathers into a fist and springs back — and the cooperative shops price fairly without the bargaining theatre.

It flourished under the eighteenth-century Holkar queen Ahilyabai, whose enlightened rule left the town its palaces and temples and its celebrated Maheshwari handloom saris, still woven here today.

With its gentle river rhythm and beautiful architecture, Maheshwar pairs naturally with Mandu and Omkareshwar, making a lovely, unhurried stop on a central-India trip from Gujarat.

Ahilyabai’s story gives the town its temper: ruling from this modest fort rather than Indore’s grandeur for nearly thirty years, she financed temples and ghats from Kashi to Somnath — Gujarat’s own great shrine was rebuilt with her patronage — and governed with a competence that made her, by wide agreement, one of eighteenth-century India’s finest rulers. The Rehwa Society, founded by her descendants, revived the Maheshwari weave in the 1970s; its looms beside the fort turn out the airy cotton-silk saris whose reversible borders are the town’s signature, and buying one at source funds the weavers’ school.

Maheshwar rewards a night: the fort’s heritage hotel and the town’s guesthouses put the dawn ghats outside your door, film crews’ favourite light included — ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and a dozen others shot here. From Gujarat, come via Indore (90 km) and loop Mandu’s Afghan monuments and Omkareshwar into the same unhurried three days; October to March is the season.
