Bundi is a delightfully offbeat town in southern Rajasthan, tumbling below a hillside fort and palace and largely untouched by the crowds of its bigger neighbours.
It is famous for its intricate stepwells, its blue-washed old lanes and, above all, the exquisite Bundi-school murals inside its rambling Garh Palace.
Crowned by the brooding Taragarh Fort and ringed by lakes, Bundi rewards slow wandering and is an easy, atmospheric add-on near Kota for travellers exploring Rajasthan from Gujarat.

Palace murals
The Chitrashala inside the Garh Palace holds the finest surviving Bundi-school murals — miniature painting worked at wall scale, in blues and greens, and largely unrestored.
Grand stepwells
Bundi has more stepwells than any comparable town in Rajasthan; Raniji ki Baori, built at the end of the seventeenth century, is the grandest of dozens scattered through the lanes.
Blue old town
The old town below the palace is painted blue and barely changed, a warren of lanes that rewards walking with no particular destination in mind.
Taragarh Fort
Taragarh Fort broods on the ridge above, largely unrestored and overgrown, which is much of why the approach is so atmospheric.

How to spend an hour or two
Tour Bundi Palace
Find the Chitrashala in the palace and give it proper time — these murals are the reason serious visitors come to Bundi at all.
Climb Taragarh Fort
Climb to Taragarh Fort on the ridge for the long view back over the blue town and the lakes beyond it.
See the stepwells
Descend Raniji ki Baori, a stepwell of real architectural quality sitting almost unremarked in the middle of town.
Walk the blue lanes
Walk the old town slowly. Bundi is small enough to cover on foot and the lanes are the experience.
Visit Sukh Mahal
Go out to Jait Sagar lake and Sukh Mahal on its bank, which is where the town goes in the late afternoon.
When to go
October to March is the season — cool clear days for walking the town and climbing to the fort without suffering.
The monsoon fills the lakes and greens the hills around Bundi, and the town looks its best against that backdrop.
April to June is hot and dry, and the climb to Taragarh in that heat is genuinely punishing.
