ABOUT THE PLACE

A wide white sheet

Gira Falls (Gira Dhodh) is one of the most impressive waterfalls of the Dangs — a broad, horseshoe-like curtain of water where the Khapri river drops towards the Ambika near Waghai. In and just after the monsoon, when the rivers are full, the falls thunder over the rock ledge in a wide white sheet framed by green forest, throwing up spray and drawing visitors to the viewing area above.

Even in the cooler months it remains a scenic spot, and its forest setting near the Waghai botanical garden makes it an easy and rewarding stop on a tour of the Dangs’ waterfalls and woodlands.

WHY VISIT

Reasons to make the time

💧

Broad falls

The water spreads across a wide rock ledge and falls as a single broad sheet rather than a narrow plunge.

🌊

River-fed

The Khapri river feeds the falls, dropping towards its confluence with the Ambika below.

🌧️

Monsoon power

In full monsoon flow the noise carries well before you reach the viewpoint, and spray drifts across it.

🌳

Forest setting

Dense forest frames the falls on both sides, and the Dangs are at their greenest through this season.

📷

Photogenic

The horseshoe curve of the ledge is the falls' distinguishing feature, giving them their width.

🚗

Easy stop

Waghai is a few minutes away, which makes this easy to combine with the botanical garden there.

THINGS TO DO

How to spend an hour or two

01

See the falls

Come between July and October, when the Khapri is full and the falls are actually running.

02

Visit after monsoon

Use the viewing area above the ledge rather than scrambling towards the lip.

03

View from above

Watch the spread of the water across the horseshoe, which is what makes Gira different from a narrow fall.

04

Enjoy the forest

Keep off the wet rock. The ledge is slippery and the flow can rise quickly after upstream rain.

05

Photograph the curtain

Go on a weekday if you can; this is a popular monsoon day-trip and weekends are crowded.

06

Take care near water

Pair the falls with the Waghai botanical garden and Saputara, both close by.
