Sector Lakes

Landscaped lakes across planned Gandhinagar, calm spots for an evening walk

Region

Gandhinagar, capital region

Best time

Evenings; winter months

Ideal duration

About an hour

Good for

Walks, families and photography

The sector lakes are the landscaped waterbodies dotted through Gandhinagar's planned sectors, adding to the green, spacious character of the capital. Bordered by walkways and gardens, they give residents and visitors calm places to walk, sit and watch the light on the water. Along with the sector gardens, they are part of what makes Gandhinagar feel unusually open and unhurried for a city.

These are gentle, everyday leisure spots rather than dramatic sights, best enjoyed in the cooler parts of the day. Expect landscaped edges, birdlife on the water, and a relaxed local crowd out for exercise or fresh air. If you are exploring the capital, a lakeside stroll is an easy, pleasant way to break up visits to the bigger attractions nearby.

What to see and do at the sector lakes

Walk the paths around the water, sit and unwind, and watch for the birds that gather at the calmer lakes. Sunset over the water is a rewarding time for a stroll or a few photographs.

The lakes pair naturally with the capital's gardens and other sights, so you can string together several green stops in an easy afternoon and evening. Different lakes vary in size and setting, so it is worth seeing more than one if you have time.

How to get there

The lakes are spread across Gandhinagar's sectors and are easy to reach by road within the compact, well-planned city. Taxis and app cabs work well, and locals can point you to the nearest or most attractive lake to where you are staying.

Best time to visit the sector lakes

Evenings and early mornings, especially through the cooler winter months, are the most enjoyable. Water and birdlife are most active around dawn and dusk, while summer middays are hot and quiet in the open.

Good to know

  • Visit at sunset for the best light.
  • Carry water in warmer weather.
  • Watch for birds around quieter lakes.
  • Combine with the sector gardens nearby.

Can I see birds here?

Yes, calmer lakes often attract birdlife, best seen in the early morning or evening.

Why a planned city has lakes at all

Gandhinagar was laid out from nothing in the 1960s as Gujarat's new capital, on a grid of numbered sectors either side of the Sabarmati. The plan set aside a great deal of green space, and water bodies were built into it — partly as landscape, partly to hold monsoon runoff and recharge groundwater in a state where that matters.

The result is that several sectors have a lake at their centre, landscaped with a walking path around the edge, planted with trees and used every morning and evening by the people who live in the surrounding blocks. They are municipal amenities rather than sights, and understanding that before you go is the difference between being pleasantly surprised and disappointed.

What they are like

Expect a paved or gravel walking circuit, benches, mature trees and open water — not boating jetties, cafés or ticket counters. Some have exercise equipment and children's play areas; most have a temple or shrine somewhere on the bank.

Their real character comes from how they are used. Before seven in the morning the circuits fill with walkers, and again after five. In between they are almost empty, which is when they are pleasantest if what you want is quiet.

Birds

The lakes are better for birds than their size suggests, because they sit inside one of the greenest cities in India. Egrets, pond herons, kingfishers and moorhens are resident; in winter the water attracts ducks, and the surrounding trees hold parakeets, barbets, koels and sunbirds in numbers. Nothing rare, but a good hour with binoculars at dawn is easy to come by.

How to use them

Treat a sector lake as a break rather than a destination. If you are in Gandhinagar for Akshardham, the Capital Complex or Mahatma Mandir, the nearest lake is a good place to sit for half an hour between them — and it will show you the residential city, which the monument circuit does not.

Go at dawn or in the last hour of daylight. Carry water; facilities vary from lake to lake and some have none. There is no entry fee. Keep off the grass where it is fenced for regrowth, and take your litter out.

The bigger green spaces

If you want more than a circuit of a small lake, Gandhinagar has better options nearby. Sarita Udyan sits on the Sabarmati bank with lawns, shade and a small deer park. Indroda Nature Park, across the river, is far larger and holds a zoo, a botanical section and a well-known fossil and dinosaur park. Either makes a fuller morning than a sector lake, and both combine easily with one.

October to March is the comfortable season. In the monsoon the lakes fill and the city is at its greenest, which is when Gandhinagar most obviously earns its reputation. April to June is hot enough that only the earliest and latest hours are worth being outdoors at all.
