A mosque inside a fortress

Within the ramparts of Uparkot — Junagadh's citadel, occupied in one form or another for well over two thousand years — stands the Jama Masjid, one of the fort's most atmospheric survivals. Its history is written in its own fabric: the building began as a Hindu palace or temple structure and was converted to a congregational mosque under the Gujarat Sultanate, most likely in Mahmud Begada's era, so its prayer hall rests on rows of pillars whose carving belongs to an entirely earlier world. Bracket capitals, floral bands and stepped bases carry Hindu and Jain motifs; the mihrab and the qibla wall were added around them.

The hall's most striking feature is what is missing. Three large square openings in the roof — courtyards cut into the covered space rather than left outside it — flood the pillared interior with shafts of light, an unusual solution that turns the whole hall into a study in shadow and glare through the day. Photographers find it irresistible; so do the pigeons.

Where it sits

The mosque is one stop on Uparkot's circuit, and the fort deserves the whole morning: the Buddhist caves cut in three storeys with their carved pillars and water channels, the two great stepwells — Adi Kadi Vav, hewn straight down through living rock, and the spiralling Navghan Kuvo — the Ashoka rock edict just outside the approach, and the ramparts' views to Girnar's peaks. Recent conservation work has reopened much of the fort after years of neglect.

Practical notes

Uparkot keeps daylight hours with a modest ticket covering the fort's monuments; the mosque needs no separate entry and is no longer in regular congregational use, so visitors of any faith may walk the hall — quietly, and with shoes removed where signs ask. Wear proper footwear for the fort's uneven stone and stepwell stairs, carry water, and start early. October to March is Junagadh's season, and the fort pairs naturally with the Mahabat Maqbara's flamboyance and the Girnar road below.
