Indroda Dino Park

A fossil and dinosaur park within the Indroda reserve in Gandhinagar

Region

Gandhinagar, near Ahmedabad

Best time

Winter, November to February

Ideal duration

Two to three hours

Good for

Children, families and curious minds

The Indroda dino park is the fossil and dinosaur section within the larger Indroda nature reserve in Gandhinagar, and it is one of the area's most talked-about family attractions. Gujarat is associated with important dinosaur fossil finds, and the park uses models and displays to bring that prehistoric story to life for visitors, especially children. Life-size dinosaur figures set among the trees give it a memorable, slightly playful feel.

Set within a green, wooded reserve, the dino park combines the fun of the models with the calm of a nature walk. It is educational without being heavy, and works well for families with young children. Facilities and displays can change over time, so check what is currently open, but the core draw of walking among dinosaur replicas remains its signature experience.

What to see and do at the Indroda dino park

The life-size dinosaur models are the star attraction, popular with children and good for photographs. Displays about fossils and prehistoric life add context and make the visit educational as well as fun.

Because the park sits inside the wider Indroda reserve, you can combine dinosaurs with a walk through greenery and, depending on access, other parts of the nature park. Allow enough time to wander at a relaxed pace.

How to get there

The dino park is in Gandhinagar, within the Indroda reserve, a short drive from the city centre and easily reached from Ahmedabad. Taxis and app cabs are simplest. It is spread out, so be ready to walk once you arrive.

Best time to visit the Indroda dino park

The cooler winter months, roughly November to February, are the most comfortable, with pleasant mornings for walking among the exhibits. Summers get hot in the open, so an early start and water are wise if you visit then.

Good to know

  • Great for children; allow time for photos.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking.
  • Carry water in warmer weather.
  • Check current opening details before visiting.

Why Gujarat has a dinosaur park at all

Gujarat is genuinely important dinosaur country. The Kheda–Panchmahal belt around Raiyoli, near Balasinor, is one of the largest dinosaur hatchery sites ever found — thousands of fossilised eggs have come out of it — and it produced Rajasaurus narmadensis, a horned predator described from Indian remains. Indroda's dinosaur and fossil park exists to put that story in front of the public, and it is often called the country's Jurassic Park with only mild exaggeration.

The park occupies part of the larger Indroda Nature Park reserve on the Sabarmati's bank in Gandhinagar, run by the state ecological education foundation. The dinosaur section combines genuine fossil material — eggs among it — with life-size models of the animals set along a wooded trail, interpretive panels, and a hall covering the geology behind the finds.

Walking the trail

The fossil trail is laid out as a walk through time: models of sauropods, theropods and the Narmada-valley fauna stand among the trees, each with panels explaining what was found in Gujarat and where. Children treat it as a safari; adults get a competent introduction to why the Narmada valley matters to palaeontology. The egg fossils are the things to look for — unglamorous at first glance and remarkable once you register what they are.

Allow two to three hours for the dinosaur section and the natural-history buildings, more if you take on the wider reserve.

The rest of Indroda

The same ticket puts you inside one of the bigger green spaces in the capital. The zoo section holds leopards, deer, antelope and a large walk-through aviary; a botanical section covers Gujarat's plant communities; and the skeleton gallery — with the mounted skeletons of a blue whale among others — is better than anything else of its kind in the state. The reserve's woodland itself carries good birdlife, nilgai and langurs, and the quieter trails feel far from a capital city.

Practical notes

The park is open through the day with a modest entry fee and a weekly closing day — commonly Monday — so check before travelling. Mornings are best: the animals are active, the trail is shaded but fills with school groups by mid-morning on weekdays. Food and water are available near the gates but not deep in the reserve; carry water for the longer trails.

October to March is the comfortable season. The monsoon makes the woodland green and the trail muddy in patches; summer confines a visit to the first hours after opening.

For the full dinosaur story, pair Indroda with the Balasinor fossil park at Raiyoli, about two hours away in Mahisagar district, where the actual hatchery site can be visited — the two together make Gujarat's best natural-history day out. Within Gandhinagar, Sarita Udyan, Akshardham and the Capital Complex all combine easily with a morning here.
