ISKCON & Akshardham

Two grand modern temples showcasing devotion, art and family-friendly appeal

Region

Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar

Best time

October to March

Ideal duration

Half to full day

Good for

Families, architecture, spirituality

ISKCON and Akshardham together represent the more contemporary face of temple culture in the Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar area. ISKCON, tied to the global Krishna-consciousness movement, is known for its lively kirtans, welcoming atmosphere and popular vegetarian food, while Akshardham in Gandhinagar is a monumental complex celebrated for its detailed stonework, landscaped grounds and exhibitions.

Visited together, they make a satisfying day that blends spirituality with polished, family-friendly experiences. Akshardham in particular impresses with its scale and craftsmanship, and it typically has a structured visitor experience. ISKCON offers a warmer, more informal devotional vibe. Both are easy to combine with a wider Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar itinerary.

What to see and do at ISKCON and Akshardham

At ISKCON, soak up the kirtans and aarti, explore the temple interiors and try the prasad or restaurant food many visitors rate highly. The mood is joyful and open, and it suits families and first-time temple-goers well.

Akshardham rewards a slower visit, with its carved main monument, gardens and exhibition spaces. Security is usually strict here, so expect to leave bags, phones and cameras at cloakrooms. Check current timings and any show schedules before you go, since these can change.

Two answers to one question

Ahmedabad's ISKCON temple and Gandhinagar's Akshardham are the twin showpieces of Gujarat's modern devotional architecture — two large campuses, half an hour apart, that answer the same question differently: what should a temple be in the present age? ISKCON's Radha Govind Dham on SG Highway answers with kirtan — a carved sandstone shrine where the Hare Krishna movement's music, festivals and open-armed welcome set the tone. Akshardham answers with monument: the Swaminarayan tradition's vast pink-sandstone mandir, raised in 1992 by the BAPS organisation as a forerunner of its famous Delhi counterpart, standing in 23 acres of gardens with the gold-leafed image of Bhagwan Swaminarayan at its heart.

Akshardham's campus is built for the full family day: the mandir's carved exterior and its ten-storey scale, the exhibition halls walking through the Swaminarayan story and India's spiritual heritage, the evening Sat-Chit-Anand water show — a laser-fountain spectacle retelling an Upanishadic story of a boy who out-questions death — and gardens that absorb children until closing. Security is airport-grade (no phones, cameras or bags inside; free lockers at the gate), entry to the mandir is free, and the exhibitions and show carry modest tickets.

Making the pairing work

The two temples make a natural devotional day on the city's northern axis: ISKCON's morning darshan and Govindam thali, then Akshardham from mid-afternoon so the exhibitions lead into the sunset mandir and the water show after dark. Akshardham closes Mondays; both run latest and liveliest on festival days — Janmashtami at ISKCON, Swaminarayan Jayanti and Diwali's annakut at Akshardham.

Practical notes

Akshardham sits in Gandhinagar's Sector 20, about 25 minutes from ISKCON's SG Highway campus by cab; the Adalaj stepwell and Trimandir lie on the same corridor for a fuller circuit of old and new sacred architecture. Dress modestly for both, budget three hours minimum for Akshardham, and book nothing — both campuses run on walk-in welcome, which is rather the point. October to March gives the garden hours their kindness.
