The shore of a divine wedding
About 60 km down the coast from Porbandar lies Madhavpur Ghed, where a long, beautiful beach of golden sand, backed by dunes and casuarina, meets the Arabian Sea. Madhavpur is steeped in legend: it is traditionally held to be where Lord Krishna married Rukmini, and each spring the village celebrates the Madhavpur Mela — a vibrant multi-day fair re-enacting the divine wedding, drawing pilgrims and folk performers, and in recent years cultural troupes from India’s northeast, honouring the legend’s Arunachal connection.
Beyond the fair, the beach is gloriously quiet — perfect for long walks, camel rides and sunsets — with the old Madhavrai temple nearby. It is one of the most appealing and atmospheric stretches of the entire Saurashtra coast.

Madhavpur Ghed is held to be the place where Krishna married Rukmini, after carrying her away from her own wedding at her request.
The old Madhavrai temple beside the shore marks the association, and the site has drawn pilgrims for a very long time.
A five-day fair each spring re-enacts the wedding, with a procession carrying Krishna to the mandap on the sands.
Outside the fair it reverts to what it is the rest of the year — a long, quiet, almost empty beach.

Madhavpur’s beach is a broad natural shore of soft golden sand, backed by low dunes and belts of casuarina trees that give it a sheltered, away-from-it-all feel. Behind the sands lie the village and the fair ground that springs to life during the Madhavpur Mela, and the historic Madhavrai temple associated with the Krishna–Rukmini legend.
There is little built infrastructure on the beach itself — its appeal is the long, quiet sweep of sand, the dunes and the sea, framed by legend and the colour of the spring fair.

When to go
November to February is the season on the Porbandar coast — cool, clear and the quietest time on the beach.
Spring brings the Madhavpur Mela and with it the crowds; it is the one time the beach is genuinely busy.
April to June is hot, though the sea breeze takes the edge off; go early in the morning or late in the day.
