ABOUT THE PLACE

The goddess on the hill

On the Koyla Dungar hill near Miyani, on the Porbandar coast, stands the temple of Harsiddhi Mata — a much-revered form of the Mother Goddess. Pilgrims climb the hill (or drive partway) to the shrine, drawn by the goddess’s reputation as a powerful, wish-granting deity and by the panoramic views of coast and plain from the top.

Harsiddhi is woven into Gujarat’s legends, linked in tradition to the region’s rulers and to tales of the goddess herself. The temple, with its bells, flags and steady stream of devotees, is especially busy during Navratri, when the worship of the goddess reaches its peak.

Atmospheric, panoramic and steeped in devotion, it is one of the Porbandar coast’s most important shrines — a rewarding pilgrimage for those drawn to Shakti worship and big coastal views.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

A shrine crowning the hill

Harsiddhi Mata’s temple sits atop the Koyla Dungar hill, reached by a climb of steps that itself forms part of the pilgrimage. The shrine, hung with bells and crowned with flags, houses the image of the goddess; its commanding position gives wide views over the surrounding coast and plains.

Like many Shakti shrines, its power lies less in elaborate architecture than in its setting, its rituals and the devotion of the pilgrims who climb to it — most intensely during the nine nights of Navratri.
