ABOUT THE PLACE

A palace facing the sea

Strung along the Porbandar seafront, the Huzoor Palace was the seaside residence of the Rana rulers — the Jethwa dynasty — of Porbandar state, built in the early 20th century. A long, European-influenced palace of wings, balconies and gardens facing the Arabian Sea, it spoke of the wealth and modern tastes of the princely house.

Together with the nearby Daria Rajmahal and other royal buildings, it formed a seafront estate where the rulers could take the sea air. Its architecture blends colonial and Indian elements in a sprawling, elegant composition raised just above the waves.

While interior access is generally restricted — parts remain with the royal family — the palace’s long seaward façade and dramatic coastal setting make it a striking part of Porbandar’s heritage, best appreciated from the promenade as the evening light softens over the sea.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

A long seaward palace

Huzoor Palace is a sprawling, low-slung palace built to face the sea, its long façade ranged in wings, verandahs and balconies that catch the coastal breeze. The style is broadly European — colonnades, arched openings and classical proportions — softened with Indian detail, in the manner favoured by Gujarat’s early-20th-century princely houses.

Set just above the shoreline within a seafront estate, the palace was designed as much for the view and the air as for grandeur, turning its best face toward the Arabian Sea.
