An ancient sea port
Porbandar is best known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, but the city itself is an ancient and atmospheric Arabian Sea port with a long history of maritime trade — identified by tradition with the legendary Sudamapuri, home of Krishna’s friend Sudama.
Its old quarter is a weave of narrow lanes, carved stone havelis and merchant houses built on the wealth of seafaring and trade with Africa and the Gulf, while the Chowpati seafront and the working fishing harbour give the city its salty, sea-facing character.

Porbandar traded across the Arabian Sea long before recorded charters — tradition knows it as Sudamapuri, Sudama's own city.
Wealth flowed in from the sea runs to Africa and the Gulf, and the merchant fortunes built in stone.
Porbandar State raised its palaces and havelis from the same trade, in the creamy local limestone.
And in 1869 the Mahatma was born in one of those merchant lanes — the port town's greatest export.
