About Porbandar
Porbandar, on the Arabian Sea coast of Saurashtra, is forever known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. This old port city — once a princely state trading with Africa and Arabia — wears its history quietly along a breezy shoreline.
At its heart is Kirti Mandir, the memorial beside the very house where Gandhi was born in 1869. Porbandar is also tied to Sudama, Krishna’s devoted friend, honoured at the Sudama Temple. Inland rise the Barda Hills, a sanctuary of leopards and birds.
With beaches, bird sanctuaries and the legacy of the Mahatma, Porbandar gently blends pilgrimage, history and the sea.
Practically, Porbandar works best as the middle stop on the Saurashtra coastal run between Dwarka and Somnath, both around two hours away by road, with an airport and rail connections of its own. A full day covers the Gandhi circuit — Kirti Mandir and the birth haveli, then Sudama Mandir and the old town’s carved stone mansions — with the working fishing harbour at dawn and Chowpatty beach at sunset bracketing it.
Beyond the town, the Barda Hills sanctuary rises inland with leopards, chinkara and good birding, while Madhavpur Ghed down the coast adds an empty golden beach and the Madhavrai temple where Krishna’s wedding to Rukmini is remembered each spring. October to March is the comfortable season; the monsoon closes the beaches but greens the hills.
