Raiyoli Fossils

A noted dinosaur fossil site in eastern Gujarat, rich in ancient egg finds

Region

Mahisagar district, eastern Gujarat

Best time

Roughly October to March

Ideal duration

A couple of hours

Good for

Science, families, curiosity

The Raiyoli fossils are the celebrated dinosaur remains found near the village of Raiyoli in eastern Gujarat, an area regarded as one of the significant fossil sites of its kind. It is especially associated with large numbers of dinosaur egg finds and skeletal remains, which point to it once being a nesting ground in a very distant age. For anyone fascinated by deep time and prehistory, it is a genuinely unusual place to visit in India.

The site is developed with a fossil park and interpretive facilities that help make sense of what has been discovered here. Rather than dramatic scenery, the draw is the scientific story and the chance to stand where dinosaurs once roamed. It is popular with families and curious travellers looking for something out of the ordinary.

What to see and do at the Raiyoli fossils

Explore the fossil park and its displays, which explain the finds, including the dinosaur eggs and remains, and the ancient environment they came from. Interpretive material and, where present, reconstructions help bring the prehistoric story to life for all ages. It is an engaging, educational stop rather than a scenic one.

Allow time to absorb the exhibits and imagine the landscape as it once was. The site suits families and anyone with an interest in natural history, and it pairs with a broader tour of eastern Gujarat's towns and countryside.

How to get there

Raiyoli lies in the Mahisagar district of eastern Gujarat, reachable by road from cities such as Vadodara and Godhra, with Vadodara the nearer large hub for air and rail links. A car or hired vehicle is the practical way to reach the village and fossil site.

Best time to visit

The cooler months from about October to March are the most comfortable for a visit that involves time outdoors at the site. Summers are hot in this belt, and the monsoon brings showers and humidity that make an open-air visit less pleasant.

Good to know

  • Read up on the fossil finds to enrich the visit.
  • Great for families and curious young travellers.
  • Visit in the cooler season for outdoor comfort.
  • Combine with nearby eastern Gujarat towns.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Raiyoli fossils?

They are celebrated dinosaur remains, including many egg finds, discovered near Raiyoli village in eastern Gujarat, marking it as an important fossil site.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, the fossil park and its displays make it an engaging, educational outing for families and curious visitors.

Is there dramatic scenery?

The appeal is the scientific and prehistoric story rather than landscape, so come for the exhibits and the sense of deep time.

One of the world's great hatcheries

Raiyoli, a village near Balasinor in Mahisagar district, sits on one of the largest dinosaur nesting grounds ever found. Excavations from the 1980s onward turned up fossil eggs in extraordinary numbers — whole clutches preserved in the Cretaceous sediments — along with bones that rewrote India's place in dinosaur science. Palaeontologists rank the site among the world's two or three most significant hatcheries, and its most famous resident is Rajasaurus narmadensis — the 'regal reptile of the Narmada' — a horned, heavy-bodied predator described from remains found in this belt.

Sixty-five million years ago this was a river floodplain where herds of titanosaurs — long-necked plant-eaters — returned season after season to lay. The eggs fossilised where they sat; some never hatched, and their stone spheres are the site's signature find.

The Fossil Park

The Balasinor Dinosaur Fossil Park at Raiyoli now presents the site properly: a modern museum with interactive galleries, life-size models, real fossil displays, and the fenced excavation ground where eggs and bone fragments remain visible in the rock they were laid on. The museum walks Gujarat's Cretaceous world from egg to extinction, and it is genuinely well done — worth ninety minutes of anyone's day, and children take to it instantly.

Guides — some from the village, trained on the site's science — walk visitors over the fossil ground itself. Do not pocket anything: the ground is protected, and every fragment removed is science lost.

Practical notes

Raiyoli is about 90 minutes from Ahmedabad and under an hour from Nadiad, off the Balasinor road. The park is ticketed and generally closed on Mondays; check current timings before travelling. October to March is the comfortable season — the fossil ground is open and shadeless, so summer visits belong to the early morning.

Balasinor town adds its own footnote: the former princely family — whose 'dinosaur princess' Aaliya Sultana Babi championed the site for decades — runs their palace as a heritage stay, and the pairing of fossil ground and palace lunch makes the classic Raiyoli day. Pair it also with Indroda's dinosaur park at Gandhinagar for Gujarat's full prehistoric circuit.
