✦ DISTRICT TRAVEL GUIDEIndia's dairy heartland.
Anand is one of Gujarat's 33 districts — explore its destinations, culture, food, heritage, wildlife and hidden gems in this complete travel guide.
Anand is the ‘Milk Capital of India’ — the cradle of the White Revolution and home of Amul, the farmer-owned cooperative that transformed rural India. At its heart lies the leafy education township of Vallabh Vidyanagar, while nearby Karamsad was the home of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India.
This is the fertile Charotar — a prosperous belt of dairy villages, mango orchards and tobacco fields. To the west, the ancient port of Khambhat (Cambay) once traded with the world and remains famed for its Jain temples and dazzling agate craft.
For visitors the district’s draws are unusually specific. The Amul dairy campus at Anand runs tours with a museum tracing how a farmers’ strike in 1946 became Operation Flood and made India the world’s largest milk producer; Karamsad, minutes away, preserves Sardar Patel’s modest ancestral home as a memorial; and Vallabh Vidyanagar’s campus township, purpose-built for education after independence, explains a great deal about why the Charotar looks the way it does.
West of the district, Khambhat rewards a half day with the fourteenth-century Jami Masjid, the workshops where agate and carnelian have been cut for millennia, and the strange emptiness of a shore where the sea withdrew and took a world-class port with it. Anand sits on the Ahmedabad–Vadodara corridor with fast road and rail links to both, making it an easy stop rather than a detour. October to March is the comfortable season.
