About Bhavnagar
Bhavnagar, on the Gulf of Khambhat in eastern Saurashtra, is a graceful old princely city — once a thriving port and now a gateway to one of Jainism’s holiest sites. Founded in 1724, it keeps the unhurried charm of its Gohil heritage.
Just south rises Shatrunjaya hill at Palitana, climbed by some 3,800 steps past more than 800 marble temples — among the most sacred Jain pilgrimages on earth. Nearby, Velavadar’s golden grasslands shelter blackbuck, wolves and harriers.
From the hilltop views of Takhteshwar temple to the vast ship-breaking yards of Alang, Bhavnagar blends faith, wildlife and maritime history.
Bhavnagar makes an unusually good base because its attractions run in every direction and none is far. Palitana’s Shatrunjaya hill, the holiest site in the Jain world with some nine hundred temples on its ridges, is an hour south; Velavadar’s blackbuck grasslands, with their winter harrier roost and resident Indian wolves, an hour west; and Sihor, the Gohils’ hill-girt old capital, twenty minutes inland.
In the city itself, the marble Takhteshwar temple crowns the skyline and gives the best view over the Gulf of Khambhat, with the Barton Library, Gaurishankar lake and Victoria Park filling an easy day. Down the coast at Alang lies the world’s largest ship-breaking yard, visitable only by permit. The city is also famous across Gujarat for its gathiya, queued for twice daily. October to March is the season.
