About Jamnagar
Jamnagar, the ‘Jewel of Kathiawar’, is a city of lakes, palaces and brass on the Gulf of Kutch. Founded in 1540 by the Jadeja rulers, it later became famous as the home of cricketer-prince Ranjitsinhji — and today as India’s ‘Oil City’, site of the world’s largest refinery.
At its heart sits Lakhota Lake, ringed by the old fort and the soaring Bala Hanuman temple — where a continuous chant of ‘Shri Ram, Jai Ram’ has rung out since 1964, a Guinness world record. Offshore lies India’s first Marine National Park, a world of coral reefs and islands.
With Ayurveda traditions, brass bazaars and the birds of Khijadiya, Jamnagar is a colourful and underrated gem.
Jamnagar rewards a slower visit than most travellers give it. The Lakhota fort and museum sit on an island in Ranmal Lake at the city’s centre, with the Bala Hanuman temple across the water keeping a chant that has run without pause since 1964 and is recorded by Guinness; the semicircular Darbargadh bazaar beneath the old palace facades sells the bandhani tie-dye and brass that made the city’s name.
Beyond the city lie the Marine National Park’s coral flats at Narara and Pirotan, walkable at low tide by permit, and the Khijadiya wetlands where fresh and salt water meet to produce one of India’s richest bird counts.
