Gandhinagar District Guide: Akshardham and Adalaj

Gandhinagar is Gujarat's capital, built from scratch from the 1960s onwards after Ahmedabad was deemed unsuitable for the role, laid out on a numbered grid of sectors in the manner of Chandigarh and considerably greener than most Indian cities of its size. It is not, in itself, a tourist destination — it is an administrative city and it feels like one.

What makes the district worth a day is what sits in and around it: Akshardham, the BAPS Swaminarayan complex with its carved sandstone mandir and evening water show; Adalaj, the complete five-storey stepwell from 1499, five kilometres away; the Indroda Nature Park with its dinosaur fossil beds; the state capital complex; and Dandi Kutir, the large Gandhi museum that visitors often expect to find at Dandi. Why spend a day in Gandhinagar district

Because of the concentration. Within about half an hour of each other you have a 1499 stepwell of genuine architectural importance, a major contemporary temple complex built in traditional carved sandstone without structural steel, a fossil park with real dinosaur egg and bone beds, a substantial multimedia museum on Gandhi's life, and the planned capital itself with its Vidhan Sabha and Mahatma Mandir. Very few Indian districts pack that range into a day.

And because it works particularly well with children. Akshardham's evening water show, Indroda's dinosaur park and zoo, and the sheer scale of Dandi Kutir are all straightforwardly engaging in a way that stepwells and ruins are not, which makes this district one of the better family days in Gujarat. It also makes an ideal first or last day of a trip, given how close it is to Ahmedabad's international airport.

1. Adalaj stepwell — early or lateFive storeys down, completed 1499 under Queen Rudadevi, with Hindu, Jain and Islamic carving in the same building. About an hour. Midday light makes it impossible to photograph.
2. Akshardham — late afternoon into eveningClosed Mondays. Mandir and gardens in good light, exhibitions at dusk, then the Sat-Chit-Anand water show after dark. Phones, cameras and bags are not permitted inside.
3. Indroda Nature ParkA fossil park with dinosaur egg and bone beds — one of the more significant such sites in India — plus a zoo, botanical areas and interpretation. Good with children; allow two hours.
4. Dandi KutirThe pyramid-shaped Gandhi museum beside Mahatma Mandir. Extensive and multimedia, and frequently confused with the memorial at Dandi itself, which is 400 km away in Navsari district.
5. The capital complexThe Vidhan Sabha and the Secretariat sectors, for anyone interested in mid-century Indian planning and architecture. Access to buildings is restricted; the layout is the point.
6. Sarita Udyan and the riverfrontGardens on the Sabarmati, useful for an hour between other stops, and a reminder of how much greener Gandhinagar is than most Indian cities.

How to get there

Gandhinagar is about 30 km from central Ahmedabad, roughly 45 minutes by road, and Ahmedabad has the international airport and the main railway station. Gandhinagar has its own station with more limited services, and the metro and bus network connects the two cities. Adalaj sits between them, about 18 km from Ahmedabad and 5 km from Gandhinagar.

Taxis, app-based cabs and autos cover everything easily, and a car for the day is the efficient way to string Adalaj, Indroda, Dandi Kutir and Akshardham together. One practical note: because phones are not allowed inside Akshardham, arrange your return transport before going in, since the crowd leaves together after the evening show.

Where to stay

Most visitors stay in Ahmedabad, which has by far the widest range in the state, including restored haveli hotels inside the walled city, and is only 45 minutes away. That works well, though it means a drive back after Akshardham's evening show.

Gandhinagar has a reasonable set of hotels, including business properties serving the state capital, and staying there makes the evening more relaxed and puts you at Adalaj early the next morning before continuing north to Modhera and Patan. For a family trip combining Akshardham, Indroda and Ahmedabad's Science City, Gandhinagar is a sensible base.

Best time to visit

October to March, with November to February the most comfortable. The district involves a good deal of walking in open sites — the stepwell, Akshardham's plazas, Indroda's grounds — and the difference between January and May is substantial. Evenings in winter are pleasant for the water show.

April to June is hot, and an evening-only visit to Akshardham works better then; Adalaj's interior remains a refuge whatever the season. The monsoon can affect Akshardham's outdoor water show, so check before travelling. The single most important scheduling point is that Akshardham is closed on Mondays, which catches out a remarkable number of visitors — build the day around it.

• Arrive at Akshardham carrying nothing — phones, cameras and bags are not permitted and cloakroom queues are slow.
