Thol Lake Guide: Birding Close to Ahmedabad

Thol is the birdwatching trip you can do before work. The lake sits roughly 40 km north-west of Ahmedabad in Mehsana district — an artificial irrigation reservoir built in the nineteenth century, ringed by reeds and scrub, declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1988 and a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2021. In winter it holds flamingos, cranes, pelicans, ducks and a long list of waders, and it is close enough to the city that a dawn visit costs you a morning rather than a day.

It is smaller and shallower than Nalsarovar and you see it on foot from the bunds rather than from a boat, which many birders prefer — you set your own pace, you can sit still, and you are not negotiating with a boatman. Why Thol is worth an early alarm

Because of the ratio of effort to reward. An hour's drive from central Ahmedabad puts you on a bund with open water on one side and farmland on the other, and in December and January that water carries greater and lesser flamingos, common and demoiselle cranes, great white pelicans, spoonbills, painted and openbill storks, and ducks in real numbers — pintail, shoveler, garganey, teal, pochard. Sarus cranes, the tall grey resident pair-bonders, are seen regularly, and marsh harriers work the reeds.

And because of the viewing. Thol is compact and you cover it on foot along raised paths, which means you control the tempo. There is no boat to hurry you, no engine noise, and enough vegetation cover along the margins to get reasonably close to feeding birds. For photographers this is a significant advantage over Nalsarovar's open-water boat work, and the low morning sun across the water is very good indeed.

How to plan a morning at Thol

1. Leave Ahmedabad before dawnYou want to be on the bund as the light comes up. From the western side of the city that means leaving by about 5.30 am in winter. Sunrise is the whole point.
2. Come in the cool monthsNovember to February for the migrants, with December and January the peak. Outside that window the lake is much quieter and can shrink significantly.
3. Pay in at the sanctuary entry pointThol is managed by the Gujarat forest department with an entry fee; check current timings and any weekly closure locally, as arrangements have changed over the years.
4. Walk the bunds, don't drive themThe reward here is being quiet and on foot. Park, then walk the raised paths slowly, scanning the water and the margins as you go.
5. Use cover and stay lowApproach the water's edge behind reeds and scrub rather than skylining yourself on the bund. It makes a real difference to how close you get.
6. Give it three hours, then move onActivity drops off sharply by mid-morning. Combine the visit with Adalaj stepwell or push north to Modhera and Patan for a full day.

How to get there

Thol Lake is about 40 km from central Ahmedabad, near Kadi in Mehsana district, and the drive takes roughly an hour depending on where in the city you start. Ahmedabad has the nearest airport and main railway station, and there is no practical public transport to the sanctuary itself.

A taxi or hired car for the morning is the simplest arrangement, and the pre-dawn timing makes a driver worth the money. Roads are good the whole way. Thol sits conveniently on the northern side of Ahmedabad, which means it combines easily with Adalaj stepwell, Gandhinagar and Akshardham, or with a longer push north to the Sun Temple at Modhera and Rani ki Vav at Patan.

Where to stay

Stay in Ahmedabad. Thol is emphatically a half-day trip and there is no reason to sleep any closer — the city offers everything from hostels and budget hotels to old-city heritage havelis and full-service business hotels, and you can be back for breakfast. Choosing a hotel on the western or northern side of the city shaves twenty minutes off a dark early drive.

Gandhinagar is a reasonable alternative base if you are already heading north, being quieter and slightly closer to the lake. There is limited accommodation in the villages around Thol and nothing that would justify the trip on its own. For a serious birding week, most visitors base in Ahmedabad and radiate outwards to Thol, Nalsarovar and Lothal in turn.

Best time to visit

November to February is the season, and December and January are the best of it. That is when the flamingos, cranes, pelicans and northern ducks are present, when dawn temperatures are pleasantly cold, and when the low light across the water is at its most photogenic. Early morning beats late afternoon comfortably, though evenings can be productive too.

March sees numbers drop as migrants depart. April to June is hot, water levels fall, and the sanctuary is much less rewarding. The monsoon refills the tank and brings resident breeding activity, but paths turn muddy and access can be awkward. As with all Gujarat wetlands, how much water there is in any given winter depends on the previous monsoon, so a dry year concentrates birds into a smaller area — occasionally to a photographer's advantage.

Practical tips

• Be on the bund at sunrise. Everything about Thol is better in the first two hours of light.
• Bring binoculars, and a long lens if you are photographing — the walk-up access here suits telephoto work.
• Wear neutral clothes, walk quietly and use reeds as cover rather than standing exposed on the bund.
• Check current timings and any weekly closure with the forest department before setting out.
• Combine with Adalaj stepwell on the way back, or continue north to Modhera and Patan for a full day.
