Gujarat is not the first place most people picture when they think of the monsoon. The state's reputation is built on salt deserts, dry Saurashtra plains and the sun-baked stone of its temples. But for a few months each year, roughly from June to September, the rains transform its eastern and southern edges into something almost unrecognisable: green hills wrapped in mist, rivers running full, and waterfalls that exist for this season alone.
This is the Gujarat that locals quietly escape to when the rains arrive, and it is far less crowded than the hill stations of the Western Ghats further south. If you time it right, a monsoon getaway here means empty roads, cool air and cascades in full flow. Here are the green corners and hidden waterfalls that make Gujarat in the monsoon such an unexpected pleasure.
The heart of monsoon Gujarat is the Dang, the state's densely forested south-eastern district, and its hill station of Saputara. Set high in the Sahyadris on the Maharashtra border, Saputara is Gujarat's only true hill station, and the monsoon is when it comes alive — the surrounding hills turn emerald, clouds drift through the valleys, and the lake at its centre sits mirror-still between the ridges.
The signature sight nearby is the Gira Falls, a broad curtain of water on the Ambika river that only truly thunders during and just after the rains. Add the sunset and sunrise points around Saputara, the tribal museum, and the sheer pleasure of a cool, misty drive through the Dang forests, and you have a monsoon weekend that feels a world away from the rest of the state.

The Gira Falls near Saputara come thundering to life only in the monsoon, when the Dang turns a deep, dripping green.
Beyond Saputara, the monsoon reveals a string of waterfalls that most travellers never see. In the Shoolpaneshwar sanctuary in the south, the Zarwani Falls tumble in tiers through thick forest, an easy walk that rewards you with a cool pool at the base. Near Vadodara, the Hathni Mata Falls drop dramatically beside a small shrine, busiest on weekends when local families come to picnic in the spray. Each of these is at its best in the weeks during and just after heavy rain.
These are seasonal wonders — come in the rains, or wait a whole year for the next chance
The important thing to understand about Gujarat's waterfalls is that they are genuinely seasonal. Arrive in the dry months and you may find little more than a trickle over bare rock. Arrive in a good monsoon and the same spots roar. That impermanence is part of the magic, but it also means planning around the rain rather than a fixed calendar, and being ready to change plans if a downpour makes a forest track impassable.
It is not only the hills that change. Across the state the monsoon softens everything: the scrub of Saurashtra flushes green, the Gir forest drips and glistens, and reservoirs and stepwell tanks that stood low all summer fill to the brim. Even Kutch, the great salt desert, briefly floods and greens before drying white again for the winter festival season. If you cannot reach the Dang, a simple drive through the countryside after good rain, past full lakes and freshly planted fields, is its own quiet reward and a side of Gujarat few outsiders ever witness.
Gujarat in the monsoon is the state's best-kept secret, a brief green season when deserts flush, forests drip and waterfalls appear as if from nowhere. You will not find the crowds of the bigger hill stations here, only cool air, empty roads and cascades in full flow. Watch the rain, pick your weekend, and let the Dang and its hidden waterfalls show you a Gujarat that most travellers never imagine exists.
