Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India — some 700 acres on a plateau above the plain, with palaces, temples, towers and reservoirs scattered across the whole of it.
Vijay Stambh
The Vijay Stambh, the nine-storey Tower of Victory, was raised by Rana Kumbha in the fifteenth century and is carved on every face inside and out.
Rajput legend
The fort's history is one of sieges and mass sacrifice — three jauhars took place here — alongside the stories of Padmini and the poet-saint Meerabai.

Ancient temples, ruined palaces and stepped reservoirs are spread across the plateau, most of them uncrowded.

How to spend an hour or two
Enter the great fort
Get up onto the plateau — you can drive most of the way — and start at the Rana Kumbha palace complex.
Climb Vijay Stambh
Climb the Vijay Stambh, whose narrow internal stair leads to a view across the whole fort and the plain beyond.
See the palaces
Walk through Rana Kumbha and Padmini palaces, and hear the stories attached to each before you judge them.
Visit the temples
Visit the Meera and Kalika Mata temples, both far older than most of what surrounds them.
See the light show
Stay for the evening sound-and-light show if the timings work; the fort at night is worth it.
When to go
October to March gives cool clear days, which matter here because the fort is enormous and entirely exposed.
The monsoon greens the plateau and brings dramatic skies over the ramparts, and the reservoirs fill.
April to June is hot and there is almost no shade across the open ground; start at opening or not at all.
