ABOUT THE PLACE

A citadel of Rajput valour

Chittorgarh is dominated by its colossal fort, the largest in India, sprawling across a hilltop above the town in central Rajasthan.

Once the proud capital of Mewar, it is a place of epic Rajput history — of sieges, sacrifice and legend, from the tale of Rani Padmini to the soaring victory tower raised by Rana Kumbha.

Its towers, palaces, temples and reservoirs make it an open-air chronicle of courage, and it sits conveniently on the route between Udaipur and the rest of Rajasthan for travellers from Gujarat.

The Vijay Stambh rises above the vast Chittorgarh Fort.

WHY VISIT

Reasons to make the time

🏰

India's largest fort

Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India — some 700 acres on a plateau above the plain, with palaces, temples, towers and reservoirs scattered across the whole of it.

🗼

Vijay Stambh

The Vijay Stambh, the nine-storey Tower of Victory, was raised by Rana Kumbha in the fifteenth century and is carved on every face inside and out.

👑

Rajput legend

The fort's history is one of sieges and mass sacrifice — three jauhars took place here — alongside the stories of Padmini and the poet-saint Meerabai.

🛕

Temples & palaces

Ancient temples, ruined palaces and stepped reservoirs are spread across the plateau, most of them uncrowded.

02

Climb Vijay Stambh

Climb the Vijay Stambh, whose narrow internal stair leads to a view across the whole fort and the plain beyond.

03

See the palaces

Walk through Rana Kumbha and Padmini palaces, and hear the stories attached to each before you judge them.

04

Visit the temples

Visit the Meera and Kalika Mata temples, both far older than most of what surrounds them.

05

See the light show

Stay for the evening sound-and-light show if the timings work; the fort at night is worth it.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

When to go

WINTEROct – Mar★★★★★

October to March gives cool clear days, which matter here because the fort is enormous and entirely exposed.

MONSOONJul – Sep★★★☆☆

The monsoon greens the plateau and brings dramatic skies over the ramparts, and the reservoirs fill.

SUMMERApr – Jun★★☆☆☆

April to June is hot and there is almost no shade across the open ground; start at opening or not at all.

🚗 The fort is enormous — hire a car or auto to move between the far-flung monuments inside.

TRAVEL TIPS

Know before you go

1Hire a car or auto for inside the fort. The monuments are kilometres apart and walking between them is not realistic.
2Allow at least half a day, and wear proper shoes — there are stairs, ramps and a lot of uneven stone.
3Check the sound-and-light show timing before you plan the evening; it varies by season.
4Pair Chittorgarh with Udaipur, about two hours away, which is where most visitors base themselves.
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Chittorgarh FAQ

Why is Chittorgarh famous?

For its fort — the largest in India and UNESCO-listed — and for the Rajput history attached to it: three sieges, three jauhars, and the legends of Padmini and Meerabai. The Vijay Stambh alone is worth the journey.

How far is Chittorgarh from Udaipur?

About 115 km from Udaipur, roughly two hours by road, which makes it a straightforward day trip or a stop on the way north.

How long do you need at the fort?

At least half a day, and a full day if you want to see it properly. The fort is vast and its monuments are spread far apart across the plateau.

How do you get around the fort?

Hire a car or auto at the gate. The distances inside are too great to cover on foot in the heat, and most visitors underestimate this.

How far is it from Gujarat?

About 380 km from Ahmedabad, on the road towards Udaipur, so it fits naturally into a Rajasthan trip from Gujarat.
