ABOUT THE PLACE

A golden city out of the desert

Jaisalmer rises out of the Thar Desert like a mirage, a whole city the colour of honey where a great sandstone fort still shelters homes, temples and shops within its walls.

Once a wealthy caravan-route town, it grew rich on trade, and that wealth shows in the astonishing carved stone of its havelis. It is one of Rajasthan’s most atmospheric cities.

Beyond the walls, the appeal is the desert itself: camel and jeep safaris to the dunes, nights under vast skies, and the golden light that gives the city its name — a natural add-on to a wider desert trip from Gujarat.

Jaisalmer’s golden sandstone fort glows warmly at sunset.
