HERITAGE · MPA serene temple town on the Narmada of riverside ghats, a hilltop fort and the famous Maheshwari weave.
Maheshwar is a tranquil, timeless town on the north bank of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh, its riverfront lined with stone ghats, temples and the graceful Ahilya Fort.
It flourished under the eighteenth-century Holkar queen Ahilyabai, whose enlightened rule left the town its palaces and temples and its celebrated Maheshwari handloom saris, still woven here today.
With its gentle river rhythm and beautiful architecture, Maheshwar pairs naturally with Mandu and Omkareshwar, making a lovely, unhurried stop on a central-India trip from Gujarat.
