ABOUT THE PLACE

A romantic city of ruins in the clouds

Mandu is one of central India’s most romantic ruins, a sprawling medieval city set on a plateau in the Vindhya hills of Madhya Pradesh.

Once the grand capital of a Malwa sultanate, it is scattered with elegant palaces, mosques, tombs and pavilions in a distinctive early Afghan-influenced style, many tied to legends of love.

Mandu is at its most enchanting in and just after the monsoon, when the plateau turns emerald and mist drifts through the arches — an atmospheric, uncrowded heritage stop for travellers exploring central India from Gujarat.

The Jahaz Mahal seems to float between two lakes at Mandu.
