LAKE CITY · RAJASTHANThe City of Lakes — palaces rising from the water, old-town lanes and a romance that has made it one of India's most-loved cities.
Udaipur is the kind of city that lives up to its postcards. Built around a chain of man-made lakes in the folds of the Aravalli hills, it pairs shimmering water with grand palaces, and the effect at dusk, when the whitewashed buildings turn gold and the lights come on across Lake Pichola, is genuinely dreamlike.
Founded by the Mewar rulers as their capital, it has kept a proud, unhurried character that draws travellers from across the world. The sprawling City Palace, the island palaces on the lake, the bustle of the old town and the local crafts and miniature paintings all give you plenty to fill two or three easy days.
For visitors from Gujarat it is one of the most rewarding short trips over the border, close enough for a long weekend yet different enough to feel like a proper holiday. The rooftop views, the boat rides and the food seal the deal.
