About 25 km from Vadodara, the Ajwa reservoir and the adjoining Nimeta gardens are a favourite weekend escape for the city’s families. The landscaped gardens spread out in lawns, flowerbeds and walkways, but the star attraction is the evening musical fountain — a choreographed show of water jets set to lights and music that delights children and adults alike.
The Ajwa lake itself, an old reservoir that helps supply water to Vadodara, adds a scenic backdrop to the greenery. Cool, festive and family-friendly, the Ajwa-Nimeta gardens are at their best in the evening.

Ajwa lake — an old city water reservoir, with the gardens landscaped beside it.
The Ajwa reservoir was built as a water supply for Vadodara under the Gaekwads, part of the same programme of public works that gave the city its museums and university.
The Nimeta gardens were laid out alongside it — lawns, flowerbeds and walkways on the bank, designed as a public leisure ground.
A musical fountain was added and became the site's main draw: choreographed jets set to lights and music, run once each evening.
It settled into being Vadodara's standard family weekend outing, about 25 km out from the city.
The musical fountain runs once each evening and is the reason most people time their visit for dusk.
Lawns, flowerbeds and walkways spread along the reservoir bank, well kept and open to walk.
The Ajwa reservoir provides the backdrop, giving the gardens an open water view most city parks lack.
It is busiest at weekends and on holidays, when Vadodara families come out in numbers.
The fountain show is pitched at families and works particularly well for children.
There is room to spread out on the lawns, and picnicking is the normal thing to do here.

THE GARDENSThe Nimeta gardens along the bank of the Ajwa reservoir.
Time your visit for the evening fountain show, which is the site's main event.
Walk the lawns and flowerbeds beforehand, in the last hour of daylight.
Arrive early for the show if you want a good position; it fills up at weekends.
Treat it as the locals do — a picnic outing rather than a sight to tick off.
Take in the reservoir itself, which gives the gardens their open aspect.
Combine the trip with Vadodara's palaces and museums, about 25 km back towards the city.
