ABOUT THE PLACE

Devotion above ritual

Shabari Dham, near Subir in the Dangs, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites of the district — the place associated in tradition with Shabari, the elderly tribal woman whose pure devotion to Lord Rama is one of the most beloved stories of the Ramayana.

It was here, by belief, that Rama accepted the berries Shabari had tasted to make sure they were sweet, honouring devotion above ritual. The hilltop temple complex, with shrines and the sacred stones said to mark the meeting, draws pilgrims year-round and is the focus of the great Shabari Kumbh gatherings.

Set amid the forested hills near Pampa Sarovar, it is also a powerful symbol of the place of tribal devotion in the epic and in living faith. A shrine to faith itself.
