Botad, a compact district carved out in 2013 on the eastern edge of Saurashtra, punches far above its size when it comes to faith. Within its modest bounds lie some of Gujarat’s most thronged pilgrimage centres: the mighty Kashtabhanjan Dev Hanuman temple at Salangpur, one of the most powerful and visited Hanuman shrines in India; Gadhada (Gadhpur), the sacred town where Lord Swaminarayan spent much of his life, now a major Swaminarayan tirth; and the goddess shrine of Khodiyar Mata at Paliyad.
October to March is the district’s comfortable season, and the winter festival calendar keeps its shrines at their liveliest through exactly those months.
Botad town itself keeps the district’s working face — cotton gins, a bustling market core and the junction railway that first put the place on the map. Travellers pass through more than they linger, and that is fine: the district’s genius lies in its shrines and its plain, and the town serves both as the practical hinge.
Botad’s paradox is its pull: one of Gujarat’s smallest and youngest districts — carved out only in 2013 — carries three pilgrimages of the first rank. Salangpur’s Hanuman draws lakhs and now raises its 54-foot bronze King of Salangpur over the plain; Gadhada anchors the Swaminarayan world as the town the founder made his home; and Paliyad’s Vihat dham serves Khodiyar Mata’s strong Saurashtra following. A single unhurried day can thread all three, with the district’s cotton-and-wheat countryside between.

The district town of Botad itself is a busy market and cotton-trading centre, while around it stretch the farmlands and small towns of the Bhal and Saurashtra borderlands.
