Five storeys sunk into the earth, cool even at noon — the Adalaj ni Vav is a carved stepwell built in 1498, where Indo-Islamic craft meets a Queen’s tragic legend on the road between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.
A palace of water underground
The Adalaj ni Vav is one of Gujarat’s finest stepwells — a five-storey descent into the earth built in 1498. Once, wells like this were lifelines: places to draw water, rest from the heat and gather in prayer. Every pillar, beam and niche is carved with flowers, elephants, dancers and geometry, blending Hindu and Islamic motifs. Even at the height of summer the lowest levels stay remarkably cool.
Rudabai’s well
The stepwell was begun by Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela line, who ruled this stretch of country in the late fifteenth century.
He was killed before it was finished, and it was completed in 1498 at the wish of his queen, Rudabai.
Tradition holds that she agreed to marry the invading sultan only if he completed the well, and threw herself into it once he had.
It is now a protected monument, and one of the two or three finest stepwells surviving anywhere in Gujarat.

How to experience it
Go early
Come early in the morning for soft light and far fewer people; by midday coach parties fill the upper landings.
Descend slowly
Go down storey by storey rather than straight to the bottom — each level is carved differently.
Read the carvings
Look closely at the pillar motifs, which mix Hindu figures with Islamic geometry on the same stone.
Feel the cool
Notice the temperature dropping as you descend. That cooling is the whole engineering point of a vav.
Hear the legend
Ask about Queen Rudabai. The story of how the well was finished is part of what the building is.
Photograph the shafts
Stand under the octagonal opening around midday, when light falls the full depth of the shaft.
Where water met worship
Stepwells were more than reservoirs — they were social and sacred spaces, cool sanctuaries where travellers rested and villagers gathered. Adalaj carries an Islamic inscription alongside Hindu carving, a reminder of Gujarat’s layered history. A local legend tells of Queen Rudabai, who completed the well begun by her slain husband and chose death over the Sultan who coveted her.

Timing
October to March is the most comfortable season above ground, and the light down the shaft is excellent.
The vav is usable all day and all year, because the lower levels stay cool whatever the surface is doing.
Even in April and May the descent is a relief — this is a building designed for exactly that heat.

What is Adalaj ni Vav?
A five-storey stepwell at Adalaj, completed in 1498, carved throughout in an Indo-Islamic style and among the finest surviving vavs in Gujarat.
Who built it?
It was begun by Rana Veer Singh and completed in 1498 at the wish of his queen, Rudabai, after his death. The story of how she secured its completion, and what she did afterwards, is told at the site.
Why is it cool inside?
It descends five storeys below ground, and the lower levels stay several degrees cooler than the surface even in high summer. That cooling — along with year-round water — is what stepwells were built for.
Where is it?
In Adalaj village, about 12 km from Gandhinagar and 18 km from Ahmedabad, just off the highway between the two. It is an easy stop on the way to or from either city.
Is there an entry fee?
It is a protected monument with a nominal entry ticket, open through the day. Allow around an hour, more if you are photographing it.
What should I look for?
The carved pillars and brackets on every level, the octagonal opening above the shaft, and the light falling the full depth to the water below.
