ABOUT THE PLACE

A royal lake reborn as the city's favourite evening out

Kankaria is Ahmedabad’s largest lake — a near-perfect, many-sided ring of water dug in the 15th century to slake the thirst of a growing capital. For centuries it was a royal retreat, with a summer palace and an island garden reached by a slender causeway.

Today it is the city at play. In 2008 the shore was reimagined as the Kankaria Lakefront, a broad promenade that comes alive after dark with families, food carts, a toy train, a small zoo and a hot-air balloon ride. The water still mirrors the sky; the difference now is the laughter around it.

It is best after sunset, when the lamps switch on and the whole loop glows. Come for an unhurried walk, a paddle boat, or simply to watch Ahmedabad unwind by the water it has loved for six hundred years.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

A polygon of water, ringed by a walkable shore

Kankaria’s shape is its signature — a regular, many-sided tank rather than a natural pond, engineered in the 15th century with stone steps, inlets and sluices to hold the monsoon. At its centre lies Nagina Wadi, an island garden linked to the shore by a stone causeway.

The modern lakefront wraps the historic tank in a continuous promenade, dotted with pavilions, play areas, food courts and the zoo, while keeping the old waterline and island intact. It is a rare place where six-century-old waterworks and a contemporary public space share the same edge.
