ABOUT

The festival of Krishna's birth

Janmashtami — the birthday of Lord Krishna — is one of the most joyously observed festivals across Amreli and Saurashtra, marking the midnight birth of the beloved deity. Devotees observe the day with fasting, prayer, and the singing of bhajans and kirtans, gathering at Krishna temples which are decorated and thronged. The celebration builds towards midnight — the hour of Krishna’s birth — when the moment is marked with aarti, the rocking of the infant Krishna’s cradle, conch and bells, and great rejoicing. Homes and temples depict scenes from Krishna’s life, and sweets are shared. In Saurashtra, Janmashtami is also the occasion for some of the region’s great lokmelas (folk fairs) — most famously the Rajkot Lokmela — and Amreli too sees fairs and festive gatherings around the festival, blending devotion with folk entertainment, rides and stalls. For the visitor, Janmashtami in Amreli offers the warmth of Krishna devotion combined with the colour of a Saurashtra fair — best experienced at a temple towards the midnight hour, or amid the festive lokmela. (A major festival in Aug–Sep; temple celebrations peaking at midnight; folk fairs across Saurashtra; dates follow the lunar calendar.)

Saurashtra celebrates Janmashtami with a proprietary intensity — this is Krishna’s own peninsula, where he ruled at Dwarka, and the festival runs deeper here than almost anywhere in India. Dwarka’s Dwarkadhish temple is the epicentre, its midnight aarti drawing enormous crowds; Amreli and every Saurashtra town keep the same vigil at their own Krishna temples, cradles decked for the infant deity, the fast broken as the conches sound the birth hour.

The days around the festival carry Saurashtra’s fair tradition with them — Janmashtami melas with rides, food stalls and folk performance, the biggest at Rajkot — and households share the festival’s particular foods, from panjiri to the makhan the butter-thief himself preferred. Travellers timing a Gujarat trip to Janmashtami should base at Dwarka for the full intensity or any Saurashtra town for the homely version; the date rides the lunar calendar in August–September, so confirm before booking.
