ABOUT THE PLACE

The great river of central Gujarat

The Mahi is one of the major rivers of western India and the defining geographical feature of Mahisagar district — indeed, the district takes its name from the river (“Mahisagar” combining Mahi and Sagar, the sea). Rising in Madhya Pradesh, the Mahi flows through Rajasthan and Gujarat before reaching the Gulf of Khambhat, and it is one of the few major Indian rivers to cross the Tropic of Cancer twice.

In Mahisagar, the river shapes the landscape — carving rocky gorges and ravines, forming the great reservoir behind the Kadana Dam, and creating remarkable natural features such as the natural arch rock, where the river has sculpted the stone into a striking bridge of rock over the water. The Mahi is also a sacred river, venerated along its course, with ghats, shrines and bathing places where local communities gather.

Its banks support agriculture, fishing and the everyday life of the riverside villages. For the visitor, the Mahi offers some of the most beautiful and dramatic natural scenery in central Gujarat — the gorges, the natural arch, the reservoir and the wide flow of the river — best appreciated after the monsoon when the river runs full.

The Mahi shapes the landscape of Mahisagar — carving rocky gorges, feeding the Kadana reservoir, and sculpting remarkable natural features such as the natural arch rock, where the river has worn the stone into a bridge over the water. A sacred river venerated along its course, the Mahi is also the source of the district’s name and its life. (A great river with scenic gorges and natural features; reach river points with local guidance; best after the monsoon.)
