ABOUT THE PLACE

The sacred temple lake of Dakor

The Gomti lake is the sacred water body beside the great Ranchhodrai temple at Dakor — an essential part of the pilgrimage experience and the scenic heart of the temple town. In the Vaishnava pilgrimage tradition, bathing in sacred waters before darshan is an important act of purification, and pilgrims to Dakor traditionally bathe in the Gomti lake before entering the temple to worship Krishna as Ranchhodrai.

The lake takes its name from the sacred Gomti river associated with Krishna’s Dwarka, linking Dakor to the wider geography of Krishna devotion. The lake is ringed by ghats — steps leading down to the water — shrines and the activity of a pilgrimage town: bathers, priests, devotees performing rituals, and the constant flow of pilgrims between the lake and the temple.

On the great full-moon (Purnima) days, when vast numbers of pilgrims converge on Dakor, the lake and its ghats are at the centre of the activity. For the visitor, the Gomti lake offers both the ritual atmosphere of a living pilgrimage site and a scenic focus to the temple town — most atmospheric in the early morning and on the Purnima days. A sacred pilgrimage lake; respect bathing and ritual; most atmospheric at dawn and on Purnima days.
