Zarwani & Ninai

Two forest waterfalls in the Shoolpaneshwar hills near the Narmada

Region

Narmada district, eastern Gujarat

Best time

Roughly September to December

Ideal duration

A day

Good for

Waterfalls, nature, short treks

Zarwani and Ninai are two waterfalls set within the forested Shoolpaneshwar country of eastern Gujarat, and they are among the more appealing natural sights in the Narmada belt. Zarwani is a gentler, tiered fall reached through woodland, while Ninai tumbles over rocky ledges in a more dramatic setting. Both come alive after the rains, when the streams are full and the surrounding forest is at its greenest.

These falls draw people who want a taste of Gujarat's wilder, wetter side, away from the desert and coast most associate with the state. Reaching them involves some travel into the hills and a bit of walking, which keeps the crowds down outside peak weekends. The reward is falling water framed by dense forest.

What to see and do at Zarwani and Ninai

At Zarwani, follow the forest approach to the tiered falls, a pleasant spot for cooling off when water levels allow. Ninai is the bolder of the two, with water dropping over rock shelves into pools below. Both suit photography and a picnic-style outing in the greenery.

The surrounding Shoolpaneshwar sanctuary adds forest drives and viewpoints to the day. Watch your footing on wet rocks, and be cautious near the water, especially when the flow is strong after heavy rain.

How to get there

The falls lie in the Narmada district hills of eastern Gujarat, reached by road from cities such as Vadodara, the nearest major hub for air and rail links. From there it is a drive into the sanctuary area followed by short walks to each fall. A private vehicle is the practical choice.

Best time to visit

The falls are at their best during and just after the monsoon, roughly September to December, when the water is plentiful. In the dry season the flow reduces and the drama fades. Avoid getting too close during heavy flow for safety.

Good to know

  • Visit in the post-monsoon window for the fullest flow.
  • Wear grippy shoes; the rocks get slippery.
  • Keep a safe distance from strong currents.
  • Combine both falls with a Shoolpaneshwar forest drive.

Frequently asked questions

What are Zarwani and Ninai?

They are two waterfalls in the forested Shoolpaneshwar hills of eastern Gujarat, one gentle and tiered, the other bolder over rocky ledges.

When should you visit the falls?

During and just after the monsoon they carry the most water and look their best, so September to December is ideal.

Are they safe to visit?

They are enjoyable with care, but wet rocks and strong post-rain currents call for caution near the water.

Two waterfalls in lion-less lion country

The Shoolpaneshwar hills — the Satpura block rising south of the Narmada in Narmada district — hold Gujarat's deepest forest outside the Dangs, and Zarwani and Ninai are its two accessible waterfalls. Both sit inside or against the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, both run on the monsoon, and both reward the drive for the forest as much as the water.

Zarwani is the close one: a short forest drive off the Kevadia road, then a walk up a stream gorge to a fall of about thirty metres dropping into a rock pool. Its nearness to the Statue of Unity has made it the busy one — in season, weekend crowds from Kevadia fill the gorge by mid-morning.

Ninai lies deeper in, off the Dediapada road: a broader fall of similar height in wilder country, with fewer visitors, a bigger pool and more of the sanctuary's silence around it. If you have time for only one and want the forest experience, Ninai is the choice.

The season

July to October is the show, with both falls in full voice and the Satpura slopes solid green. By December they thin; by March they are trickles. In the rains themselves the tracks get slippery and the streams rise fast — check conditions at the sanctuary gates, and never swim below a fall in spate. The rock aprons are polished, the pools have currents, and the barriers exist for reasons.

Sanctuary country

Both falls involve sanctuary entry — permits at the gate, small fees, and timings that close before dark. The forest around them is the real Shoolpaneshwar: teak and bamboo slopes, sloth bear and leopard country (you will almost certainly see neither), hornbills and giant squirrels for the patient, and Vasava villages along the roads. The drive to Ninai through that country is half the day's value.

Practical notes

Kevadia and Rajpipla are the bases. Zarwani fits easily into a Statue of Unity day — most visitors do exactly that — while Ninai wants a fuller half-day with the drive. Carry water, food and grippy footwear; stalls are seasonal at Zarwani and near-absent at Ninai. Weekdays beat weekends decisively at Zarwani in season.

Pair the falls with the Statue of Unity, the Shoolpaneshwar temple on the Narmada, or Rajpipla's palaces — or push on into the sanctuary's deeper trails with a forest-department guide if the waterfalls have given you the taste for this country.
