ABOUT THE PLACE

A fort on a hill of giant boulders

Idar is one of the most striking hill settlements in Gujarat — an ancient town and hill fort built around and atop a dramatic mass of giant, rounded granite boulders that rise abruptly from the plains of north Gujarat. The town has a long and proud history: Idar was the seat of a princely state (the Idar State), ruled across the centuries by various dynasties, and the hill fort — Idariyo Gadh — was its citadel.

The boulder-strewn hill, with its fortifications, gateways, the ruined palace known as Roothi Rani no Mahel (the ‘sulking queen’s palace’), temples and water cisterns, tells the story of a strategic stronghold that controlled the routes between Gujarat and Rajasthan. The landscape is the great draw: the enormous granite boulders, smoothed and rounded over aeons, create a surreal and dramatic setting, and the climb up the hill rewards the visitor with sweeping views over the town and the surrounding country.

The combination of geology, history and views makes Idar one of the most memorable destinations in north Gujarat. For the visitor, Idar offers history, a dramatic boulder landscape, a rewarding climb, and the atmosphere of an ancient hill stronghold. It is a hill fort and a climb, so wear good shoes, carry water, and come in the cooler months and at sunrise or sunset.
