ABOUT THE PLACE

The kingdom of the blackbuck

About an hour from Bhavnagar lies one of India’s most distinctive protected areas — the Velavadar Blackbuck National Park, a rare expanse of flat, golden tropical grassland on the edge of the Gulf of Khambhat. It is, above all, the kingdom of the blackbuck: herds of these elegant, spiral-horned antelope — the males a striking black-and-white — leap and graze across the open plains in numbers seen almost nowhere else.

But Velavadar is far more: it shelters one of India’s best populations of the endangered Indian wolf, plus striped hyenas, jackals and jungle cats, and in winter its grasslands host one of the largest harrier roosts in the world, drawing birders from across the globe. The treeless, big-sky landscape, especially at dawn and dusk, is hauntingly beautiful.

Compact and uncrowded, Velavadar offers a wildlife experience quite unlike Gujarat’s forests — pure grassland, pure space. (Safari permits are via the official portal.)

The park is small — about 34 square kilometres — which works in the visitor’s favour: a single morning drive covers most of it, the blackbuck are effectively guaranteed, and the open sightlines mean predators, when they show, show clearly. Wolf sightings run to luck and early starts; the harrier roost, from November, is a certainty and a spectacle, thousands of Montagu’s and pallid harriers spiralling down into the grass in the last light. The monsoon adds the lesser florican, whose springing display flight is one of Indian birding’s rarest prizes.

Book permits through the forest department’s online portal, hire a vehicle and guide at the gate, and take both the dawn and dusk slots if you can — the light alone justifies it. The Blackbuck Lodge and Bhavnagar’s hotels serve as bases, an hour’s drive away; the park closes through the monsoon’s heart and reopens for the winter season that runs to March.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Savanna on the gulf's edge

Velavadar is defined by its landscape: a flat sweep of golden tropical grassland and low saline scrub on the edge of the Gulf of Khambhat, almost treeless, running to wide horizons. This open habitat is what makes it special — perfect for fleet-footed blackbuck and coursing wolves, and for the harriers that pour in to roost each winter.

It is a wildlife experience built on grass, light and space rather than forest. (Safari access is permit-controlled; book via the official portal.)
