The Sardar Bridge carries National Highway traffic across the Narmada at Bharuch, built to take the load off the older crossings as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor grew.
The river is close to its mouth here and correspondingly wide, so the crossing is long and the water below is tidal.
It runs alongside the Golden Bridge of 1881 and the railway bridge, giving Bharuch three generations of engineering across one stretch of water.
Bharuch has been a crossing point for as long as there has been trade on this coast, and the bridges are the modern expression of that.
