WHERE TO GO

Pick a corner of Gujarat

Gujarat spans salt deserts, hills, forests, a long coastline and some of India’s oldest cities. We’ve organised everything by district so you can dig as deep as you like — start with the icons below, or browse by region.

Four broad regions shape most Gujarat itineraries. Kutch, in the north-west, is the largest district in India: it holds the white salt desert of the Great Rann, the walled town of Bhuj, and a belt of craft villages where block-printing, bandhani tie-dye and Rabari embroidery are still worked by hand. Saurashtra, the peninsula to the south, carries most of the coastline and the big pilgrimages — Somnath and Dwarka — along with Gir, the only place on earth where Asiatic lions still live in the wild.

North Gujarat holds the oldest and finest stonework in the state: the eleventh-century stepwell at Patan, the sun temple at Modhera, and the excavated Harappan city of Dholavira out on the Rann. South Gujarat is greener and wetter, running from the port cities of Surat and Vadodara up into the teak forests of the Dangs and the state’s one hill station at Saputara. Ahmedabad, India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, sits roughly in the middle and is where most trips begin.

Distances are longer than they look on a map. Ahmedabad to Bhuj is around 330 km, and Ahmedabad to Somnath about 400 km, so most travellers work in loops rather than trying to cross the state end to end. A first visit usually works best as Ahmedabad plus one region — Kutch for craft and desert, Saurashtra for coast and temples, or the north for heritage architecture. Winter, from October to February, is comfortable almost everywhere; May and June are punishingly hot outside the hills.

Every place below sits inside one of Gujarat’s 33 districts, and each district has its own page collecting its temples, beaches, wildlife and lesser-known corners. If you already know roughly where you’re headed, browsing by district is usually faster than scrolling the full list.
