What the bridge actually is

Atal Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle crossing over the Sabarmati, opened in 2022, and it carries no vehicles at all. That is the whole idea: it exists to be walked on slowly rather than crossed quickly. It runs roughly 300 metres between the two banks, widening in the middle into viewing decks where people stop, lean on the rail and stay a while.

The design takes its cue from Ahmedabad's kite tradition. The deck curves in an S through a steel structure, and the canopy overhead is a fabric roof in bright colours that reads unmistakably as kites when you look up at it. At night the whole span is lit, and the colour shifts — which is when most people photograph it, and why the crowd on the bridge is heaviest after dark.

Where it sits on the riverfront

The bridge links the Flower Park on the western bank to the event grounds on the eastern side, and both are part of the wider Sabarmati Riverfront development. That project reclaimed the river's edge through the middle of the city and turned it into continuous promenade on both banks — lower walkways at the water, upper-level roads and gardens above, and parks strung along the length of it.
